The Reality of the Koch Brothers
In late March Brave New Films, the ongoing project of filmmaker Robert Greenwald, premiered its latest feature-length documentary, "Koch Brothers Exposed". New York was chosen for the event most likely for its gravitas, and perhaps also for its distance of just a few miles from one of the Kochs' many homes.
The perspective could not have been lost on an audience who came to find out more about this pair that essentially got its start by inheriting $300 million from their father in 1967, parlaying it into billions from industries such as energy, petrochemicals, textiles and pulp and paper. They have in turn used that wealth to fund a number of conservative causes which include the election of "tea-party" and other Republican Party candidates willing to do the bidding, once in office, of wealthy elites such as (but surely not limited to) Charles and David Koch.
Rather than keep "Koch Brothers Exposed" in theaters, Greenwald and BNF immediately made it available on DVD; since then thousands of concerned folks have seen hundreds of screenings all across the country. The latest of these screenings will take place courtesy of Peace Action of San Mateo County on Monday, June 18. The venue is wheelchair accessible. "Koch Brothers Exposed" features expert interviews, investigative exposes, and extras about what the Kochs are doing to our democracy. According to the film's web site: "The billionaire brothers bankroll a vast network of organizations that work to undermine the interests of the 99% on issues ranging from Social Security to the environment to civil rights. This film uncovers the Kochs' corruption - and points the way to how Americans can reclaim their democracy." To that end a discussion will follow the film.
Charles Koch is quoted saying, "I just want my fair share, and that's all of it." By watching this film we may reaffirm that some of that belongs to us. On June 18, come find out how we can begin to take it back.
