If you’ve ever toyed with the idea of learning how to sail, here’s a chance to find out what it’s like to actually take the helm of a sailboat for a while, courtesy of the Boston Sailing Center.
Festivities will include the opportunity to take a free sail aboard one of the Center’s fleet of boats, giving first-time sailors a chance to experience what it’s like to control a serious sailboat (up to 40 feet in length) while under sail.
Trained skippers will be on board to supervise the excursion, explain a sailboat’s working parts, describe how sailors use the wind to propel the boat, and reveal some of the tricks of navigating an active waterway like Boston Harbor.
Back on land, teaching staff will be available to answer questions about the school’s award-winning Learn to Sail course. Those who sign up for the 26-hour course during the event will receive a $100 discount off the regular course fee.
