Raw Garage: Art + Music of James Swinson
Raw Garage, the solo show of artist/musician James Swinson will open August 5th at Uptown Body & Fender during Oakland’s First Friday Art Murmur, and will feature over a dozen large-scale mixed media assemblage collages created at his East Oakland studio, as well as a musical performance by his band Rockinghorse.
Swinson’s artwork draws on a wide range of influences, from 50’s early abstraction to 80’s neo-expressionism and beyon...d. Integrating fabrics, photo transfers, collage, and random found objects directly from the sidewalks and streets of urban and city life, it is contemporary art with a slant toward the avant-garde underground spirit. His pieces have appeared in a number of film and television productions including CSI: New York, Lost, Brothers & Sisters, Without a Trace, and Men of a Certain Age.
Rockinghorse features a unique blend of double rhythm guitar/vocal harmony in the indie rock/powerpop traditions. Drawing comparisons to such diverse bands such as X, The Replacements, and The Byrds, they perform original songs written by Swinson.
In his own words, “Whether in the studio painting, writing, recording music, or performing, as an artist and musician I’ve stayed true to my dream; writing songs like a storyteller, playing guitar with a hard driving rhythm, and painting like there’s no tomorrow.”
