Visual Art Studio is pleased to announce the opening of Venice of the North, new photography of Stockholm Sweden by Melinda Wheeler First Friday May 7, 2010 from 7-10pm at Visual Art Studio 208 W Broad Street, Richmond VA. Wheeler photographed this beautiful city on the water and several outer islands including Birka, a live archaeological site where an active Viking culture once thrived, during her visit there last summer. Artist Statement below. Exhibition closes Friday May 28th.

Richmond, VA – Michael Gettings will be hosting a gallery talk First Friday May 7, 2010 at 7pm at Visual Art Studio for his current exhibition Breaking Art Apart, dimensional figurative paintings on multiple panels. Each piece painted and constructed by Gettings tells a story with multiple perspectives. This is Gettings thesis exhibition for his Master of Interdisciplinary Studies with a focus on painting at VCU. Artist Statement below. Exhibition closes Friday May 28th.

Artist Statements
Melinda Wheeler
Venice of the North: Stockholm is a city on water, with an outer archipelago of over 25,000 islands. I visited it in the summer of 2009, and photographed several of these outer islands including Värmdö, Vaxholm, Sandhamm, one of the oldest historic islands where people live year round, and Birka, a live archaeological site where an active Viking culture once thrived.

Stockholm itself is placed on several different larger islands. One may visit Södermalm to learn about 19th-century Stockholm, see a beautiful view of Stockholm Harbor from the islet of Riddarholmen, and the island of Stadsholmen, where the oldest part is called Gamla Stan or ‘Old City’.

I recommend Sweden to anyone looking for something unique. It is an elegant part of the world with beautiful light, and dynamic history. -Melinda Wheeler
