This six-session series of discovery classes opens the door to family explorations. Each session includes a short introduction indoors, and then we will go outside for a hike. Each participant will receive a journal. This program is also offered on Friday mornings. - - Monarch Butterflies: September 21 - Come learn about the monarch butterfly's magnificent journey. Become a butterfly as we learn about the life cycle and body parts of these creatures. We'll take a walk through the sanctuary's gardens in search of monarch eggs and caterpillars, and, using nets, we will explore a field to observe these winged marvels. - - Frogs and Toads: September 28 - Discover what croaks and peeps at the sanctuary. Together, we'll learn the difference between frogs and toads, and their life cycles. We will explore the sanctuary's forests and wetlands in search of frogs and toads, and play a game to learn some of their calls. - - Autumn Leaves: October 5 - Join us on an autumn leaf walk as we admire the beautiful colors of fall. We will discover the different shapes, sizes, textures, and colors of leaves during a leaf scavenger hunt, and make leaf rubbings. On our return, we'll make our own leaf crowns. - - Seeds: October 12 - Fall is a perfect time to learn about seeds. We'll take apart a seed and use hand lenses to get an up-close look at what is inside. Join us for a seed scavenger hunt as we learn the different ways that seeds travel - by wind, insects, floating, or hitchhiking. - - Owls: October 19 - Learn which owls "hoot" in the night at the sanctuary. Discover what it is like to live the life of an owl by listening to different owl calls and looking at owl artifacts. We will hike to the Hemlock Forest in search of owl pellets and play an owl game along the way. - - Animals Preparing for Winter: October 26 - How do animals get ready for winter? Join us as we learn how animals prepare for the cold winter months ahead. On our hike, we will use our detective skills to look for signs that plants and animals are getting ready for the cold. Registration is required. Call 978-887-9264 for details. See http://www.massaudubon.org/catalog/listing.php?program_code=1209-IP10SU1 for more information.
