Virginia Hand Callaway was a native of Pelham, Ga., where she loved to spend time in the outdoors. She became so acquainted with native plants that she was often called a 'self-taught botonist.' Callaway was later able to apply this knowledge as she and her husband Cason worked to restore the depleted cotton fields, today known as Callaway Gardens, with plants indigenous to west-central Georgia.
