Using a combination of hand, string, and Japanese Bunraku-influenced puppetry, Singapore’s very own Mascots and Puppets Specialists presents two well-loved Asian folktales: The Story of Bukit Merah, and The Legend of the Moon.
The Story of Bukit Merah presents the legend behind the Bukit Merah (Malay for ‘Redhill’) estate in Singapore. Watch how the little boy Nadim boy saved his village from attacking swordfish by an unusual plan. The jealous king grew worried about the intelligent boy, and decided to make some plans that would lead to tragedy.
The Legend of the Moon highlights the story behind the Mid-Autumn Festival. Join Hou Yi the Warrior and his beautiful wife, Chang-Er in this fascinating story of selfless love and sacrifice as we learn about the origins of the much-celebrated Mid-Autumn Festival.
The Story of Bukit Merah premiered at the First International Marionette Festival in Hanoi, Vietnam in February 2008, winning the coveted ‘Silver Prize for Best Artist(Group)’, and the ‘Special Prize for Preservation of National Art’.
