WHAT: On Saturday, September 19 at 12:00 p.m., two legendary World War II fighter planes from the Flying Heritage Collection—a Messerschmitt Bf 109E-3 Emil and a Fieseler Fi 156-C2 Storch—will return to the sky for this season’s final ‘Fly Day’ at Paine Field. This free, public event provides a one-of-a-kind experience to see these rare, authentic war planes in flight before the summer ends. The Flying Heritage Collection will cap off its final flight of the season with Luftwaffe Day, a commemoration of the museum’s German planes and artifacts.

• The Messerschmitt Bf 109, first flown in 1935, was the first modern fighter. It was one of the most adaptable, dependable planes in history and it was Germany’s frontline fighter for the entire war. More Bf 109s were produced in ten years of production than any other aircraft, with approximately 35,000 units delivered.

• The Fieseler Fi 156 Storch is famous for helping Italian dictator Benito Mussolini escape from his mountain-top prison. This bird-like plane with long over-hanging wings was aptly nicknamed the ‘Storch’ (German for stork), because it featured folding wings to permit rail transportation to the front lines.
For the final Summer Fly Day, the Flying Heritage Collection will unveil two Flak 37 guns as its newest additions to the museum. The Flak 37, a rugged, hard-hitting and adaptable 88 mm gun, was the most famous artillery weapon of World War II.

The Flying Heritage Collection will add one gun to the collection display while the other gun, capable of firing blanks, will be displayed and fired at special public events. The first firing of the German Flak 37 gun will be held at Luftwaffe Day.
