Mexican composer Daniel Catán’s Florencia, premiered in 1996, combines magical realism with classic operatic plot elements, including disguised lovers, mistaken identities and dramatic natural disasters. Catán’s score features lush harmonies and melodies and librettist Marcela Fuentes-Berain creates complex characters inspired by the works of Gabríel Garcia Márquez. Fully staged and minimally produced with piano accompaniment.
