Our First Street Music Series features uplifting performances by regional and nationally known artists in a variety of traditions, from classical to jazz to folk and blues.
Children are welcome to attend all performances.
Classical & Jazz selections from Bach, Mozart, Vivaldi, Gershwin & Ellington.
Featured artists include: Mike Karoub (cello), James Dapogny (piano, cornet), Carl Karoub (French horn), and Nico Canzano (piano).
Professor of Music at the University of Michigan for over 40 years, James Dapogny has led his Grammy-nominated Chicago Jazz Band for over 31 years, touring across North America and releasing numerous acclaimed records and C.D.s, including a project backing up the legendary Maria Muldaur in an album of early blues classics. Dapogny’s piano and cornet playing is powerful, rich, sophisticated and inventive.
‘Cellist Mike Karoub has performed at the Smithsonian Institute, The Kennedy Center and on Garrison Keillor's A Prairie Home Companion, with Dapogny’s band. Karoub also recorded four CDs with Dapogny's band on various labels. Other national tour and recording credits include the Butch Thompson Trio, the Chenille sisters and Banu Gibson's New Orleans Hot Jazz. As a cellist, Mike has performed with several orchestras and in the Royal Garden Trio..
Carl Karoub conducts the Livingston County Concert Band's summer season and Livonia Youth Philharmonic's Wind Ensemble and Flute Choir, is co-principal French horn of the Dearborn Symphony, and assistant conductor of the Livonia Symphony. He has also played with The Detroit Symphony Orchestra, and has performed with Marvin Gaye, Elvis Presley, Stevie Wonder, the Supremes, and Gladys Knight and the Pips. He is still actively performing and teaches French horn privately.
Nicola Canzano is an accomplished young classical pianist and composer. He is a senior at Detroit Country Day and has won many awards for composition including the competitions sponsored by National Federation of Music Clubs twice, and also the Pikes Peak Young Composers Competition. He was accepted into Julliard’s Pre-College division for composition in 2006 and particularly enjoys writing chamber music.
