The international event called FIRST Robotics Competition, which is an annual robotics competition that challenges high-school students working alongside professional engineering mentors, to design and built a robot of their own for competition.
Students from Hawai‘i, the U.S. mainland, Australia, China and Taiwan will be in town to compete. This year’s game is called ULTIMATE ASCENT and is played between two Alliances of three teams each. Each Alliance competes by trying to score as many flying discs into their goals as possible during the two-minute and 15-second match. Matches end with robots attempting to climb up pyramids located near the middle of the field.
FIRST is a national organization whose goal is to inspire young people to become leaders in the fields of science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) by holding robotics competitions across the country and around the world. Educational robotics programs in Hawai‘i are coordinated and supported by the Friends of Hawai‘i Robotics.
