This class is for beginner to intermediate printers who want to deepen their understanding of refined B/W printing processes and who would like to develop their own sense of "a good print." The main emphasis will be placed on how to approach each individual negative with different contrasts and densities in a systematic manner. Students will spend a great deal of time trying to achieve an overall balance of prints by adjusting the contrast and density and carefully applying dodging and burning to local areas of images.
Also, in order to study prints produced by other photographers, field trips to the study room at Philadelphia Museum of Art, and other museums and galleries will be arranged on weekends. Some accomplished local printers/photographers will be invited to show their prints. Although these are not mandatory, students are highly encouraged to attend these extra sessions.
