The Kirovs unique 2007 production of Tchaikovskys beloved ballet was filmed at Russias Mariinsky Theater in St. Petersburg, home of the Kirov Ballet Academy and The Nutcrackers original stage when it debuted in 1892. Mikhail Shemiakin, Russian emigre and world-renowned avant-garde artist and sculptor, has boldly reinterpreted the historical ballet to delight and surprise a contemporary audience. Sophisticated and witty, Shemiakins original and wondrously unconventional interpretation differs in many ways from the traditional versions popular at Christmas, but is no less enchanting. In 2007, an exhibition of Shemiakins eye-popping costume and design sketches used in the staging of this production was presented in the private collections of the Russian Museum in St. Petersburg. Conducted by Valery Gergiev. (90 min.)First-rate performances by Irina Golub, Leonid Sarafanov, and the fabulous Anton Adasinsky. But the most delightful surprise is the eloquently expansive performance of Ekaterina Kondaurova as the Queen of Snows. -Ballettalk.comSpecial prices apply: $20.00 general admission, $18.00 students, seniors & DIA members, DFT discount coupons & passes not accepted.
