Things to Come (1936)

Beginning in Christmas, 1940 and centered in the city "Everytown," this landmark science fiction film follows a multi-decade war, the plague which follows, and the resultant retreat to a primitive society run by warlords. Then, in 1970, John Cabal, a scientist introduced earlier in the film, arrives as an envoy representing the group, 'Wings Over the World' which plans to restore civilization from its advanced scientific base. An orgy of technology continues until 2036 at which point Everytown is a vast and highly advanced underground city. However, dissension still exists and Luddites plan to stop the "scientific tyranny" they live under.
