Courbet: Dreaming the Modern was created for an exhibition in Germany that focuses on Gustave Courbet’s inward looking portraits, the dreamy eroticism of his nudes, the sense of immersion in his landscapes, and the autobiographical elements of his still lifes. Monet’s Water Lilies: Vision and Design Monet’s Water Lilies evokes the circumstances of the series’ creation during World War I and its reception afterward, juxtaposing the world inside the painting with that outside. It was filmed at Giverny and Paris and with archival photographs for the reopening of the Orangerie Museum in Paris, which houses the cycle of paintings.

The screening will feature a live performance of Tufts Professor of Music John McDonald’s cello composition Courbet, op. 449 by soloist David Russell, composed for Courbet: Dreaming the Modern. Piano music composed and performed by McDonald is also featured in Monet’s Water Lilies.
