This documentary chronicles the lives of people like 13 year-old Maria Goretti, who cares for her siblings after losing both parents to AIDS. Her life is similar to those of many in her hometown of Fort Portal, in western Uganda where AIDS has left 14 million children under the age of 15 without one or both parents. By 2010, this number is expected to exceed 25 million according to UNICEF.
Fernanda Pires' moving documentary short, Unbreakable Chain: The Effects Of HIV On Families shows many of these stories and more. Unbreakable Chain tells how the disease arrived, quickly spread, and how the African nation is dealing with it. The event will include a discussion of the film and the plight of Uganda led by filmmaker Fernanda Pires with Naomi Corera, a former Ann Arbor Montessori teacher who travels to Uganda each year to assist the children of that country.
