Fernbank Forest is a 65-acre undisturbed, mature mixed hardwood forest located right in Atlanta, which is part of Georgia's Piedmont region. Although Fernbank Forest is the largest assemblage of such land in the United States, it is a small remnant of the type of forest vegetation that originally covered the Piedmont region. Since the 1860s, nearly all of Atlanta's original vegetation has been destroyed through farming and development.
