Sullivan grew up on the tough streets of Brooklyn in the 1980's, in the role of care giver to her volatile, beautiful, deceitful, drug-addicted mother and living among drug dealers, users and substitute fathers. She survived her past, receiving an Ivy League education and eventually graduating from Columbia Universitys MFA program, but still saw herself succumb to alcohol and drug abuse. She wrote The Sky Isn't Visible from Here as a testament to the resilience of the human spirit.
