TARGET VIDEO PRESENTS: SAN FRANCISCO PUNKS AND BEYOND
Thu, Feb 18, 6, 8 & 10 pm (same program)
Artist Joe Rees in person!
In 1977 San Francisco artist Joe Rees founded Target Video and documented seminal punk and art bands before music television existed. Rees, Jill Hoffman, Jackie Sharp and others with a vision and love for underground music and art created a massive archive of music and performance. Tonight we dig in. The program will include not only local bands, but national acts as well. Featured artists include the Dead Kennedys, Flipper, Iggy Pop, and The Mutants.
(Same program screens three times.)
TARGET VIDEO PRESENTS: SURVIVAL RESEARCH LABORATORIES PERFORMANCE FILMS
Sat, Feb 20, 7 & 9 pm (same program)
Rare, early documentation of SRL, founded by Mark Pauline in 1978. Since its inception SRL has operated as an organization of creative technicians dedicated to re-directing the techniques, tools, and tenets of industry, science, and the military away from their typical manifestations in practicality, product or warfare. Their performances consist of a unique set of ritualized interactions between machines, robots, and special effects devices, employed in developing themes of socio-political satire. Humans are present only as audience or operators, and are often positioned in extremely dangerous circumstances. (Same program screens twice.)
SCARLET DIVA
By Asia Argento
Sun, Feb 21, 2 pm
Asia Argento wrote, directed and stars in perhaps the most extreme ego trip ever put on celluloid. The semi-autobiographical plot covers a few years in the life of a young Italian actress who spends her time traveling the globe, having sex and engaging in endless self-destruction. Eurotrash to the max, Scarlet Diva is a compelling, gloriously sleazy example of self-absorption taken far beyond any level of sanity. (2001, 89 min, 35mm)
TO MY GREAT CHAGRIN: THE UNBELIEVABLE STORY OF BROTHER THEODORE
By Jeff Sumerel
Thu, Feb 25, 7:30 pm
A stimulating account of the remarkable history of performer, actor and genuine eccentric “Brother Theodore.” Theodore’s television appearances spanned all the way from Jack Paar to Johnny Carson and Merv Griffin, to his notorious visits to David Letterman. The LA Daily News described him as Boris Karloff, Salvador Dali and Nijinski all in one. Weaving an array of rare audio and film clips, the film features Theodore’s admirers and friends, including Woody Allen, Eric Bogosian, Penn & Teller, Harlan Ellison and Dick Cavett. (2008, 70 min, digital video)
GOLD
By Bob Levis
Sat, Feb 27, 7:30 pm
This all-but-forgotten dose of hippie counterculture is basically a deranged psychedelic desert romp set in the Old West (but shot in Northern California). It features drunken flower children, sing-alongs, right-wing conspirators, split-screens, tinted and solarized film stock and an enormous amount of naked writhing in the dust. Gold stars improvisational comedy legend Del Close, along with fellow member of San Francisco’s The Committee, Gary Goodrow. Featuring original music from MC5 and Ramblin' Jack Elliott. (1968, 91 min, digital video restoration)
