Corpus Christi, TX: K Space Contemporary is pleased to announce the opening if its new exhibition: Fear and Loathing. This exhibition features the works of four Texas artists who infuse their work with a sense of anxiety or fear. Fear & Loathing artists are:

Sonya Berg’s artwork includes scenes of abandoned swimming pools and landscapes which allude to fear, abandonment and the unknowable in nature. She received an MFA in studio art from the University of Texas in 2010, and has garnered awards and fellowships, such as a recent grant from the prestigious Arch and Giles Kimbrough Fund at the Dallas Museum of Art for Texas artists under 30. Currently, she serves as an adjunct professor at St. Edwards University in Austin.

Rosemary Cantu is a sculptor and painter documenting her personal interpretations of self-perception and the trials of motherhood. Cantu has ties to Corpus Christi having received her BFA from Texas A & M University-Corpus Christi. She also holds an MFA from the University of North Carolina at Greensboro. Cantu currently lives in Humble.

Jorge Javier Lopez is an artist from Laredo. He has exhibited throughout Texas and Mexico and was included in the 14th Annual Young Latino Artists exhibition at Mexic-Arte in Austin. While formally untrained, Lopez practices drawing and painting figures that “are wounded and imperfect much how every person is at one point in their lives.”

Justin Varner’s drawings and paintings portray what lurks amongst the desperately ignorable branch of society. His work examines the lower classes of all races and how they operate within American society. Varner is an instructor at Lamar University in Beaumont. His work can be viewed at the Drawing Center’s Viewing Program online.

In the gift shop, our Art Star of the moment is Jennifer Arnold. Arnold is a recent graduate of TAMU-CC where she received an MFA. She invented a process of transferring photographs to translucent sheets peeled from canvas. The result is a beautiful transparent photograph.

In the Hot Spot: Indelible: Works by the Artists of Electra Art – Axis Tattoo. Tattoo artists work on paper, canvas, and wood, too. Tattoo artists are some of the most practiced and precise artists because of the clients they must please and the permanence of their work on human skin. This exhibition features what the artists do in their own time.
