Mills College continues to produce dance concerts synthesizing modern dance's rich history as well as its capacious future. Under the Artistic Directorship of Yukie Fujimoto, the Mills Repertory Dance Company will perform their Fall 2010 Concert entitled Fast Forward. The evening is a glimpse into the next wave of contemporary dance with works by local, national, and internationally renowned choreographers. The evening also offers reverence to the works that have brought dance to where it is today. MRDC will premiere new and re-worked pieces by four celebrated choreographers: Shinichi Iova-Koga, Marc Bamuthi Joseph, Yvonne Rainer, and Brenda Way.
Visiting Artist Shinichi Iova-Koga, of SF and Germany-based inkBoat, will debut a new work exploring the spaces between initiation and arrival, asking the question of "who created me?" Guest artist Marc Bamuthi Joseph, an award winning spoken word performer based in Oakland, will premier "Phantom Punches," a work inspired by the 1965 rematch between Muhammed Ali and Sonny Liston, and the subsequent years of Ali's life. The work includes text by MFA students in the Mills Creative Writing department. Yvonne Rainer's seminal piece Trio A, originally choreographed in 1966, has been reworked for Mills' dancers by repetiteur and Visiting Assistant Professor Linda K. Johnson. Finally, Bay Area renowned dance artist Brenda Way of ODC/Dance, brings her fast-paced classic, John Somebody, to the MRDC repertoire.
The final evening concert on November 20th, will be performed in San Francisco at the ODC Dance Commons - Studio B, literally bridging Mills Dance performances to the greater Bay Area audiences.
