Early on in her artistic education, Elizabeth Catlett was instructed to paint what she knew best. This philosophy remains integral throughout her artwork today. In an artistic career spanning over seven decades, Catlett has created numerous sculptures, drawings, and prints that celebrate African-American and Mexican women, from nurturing mothers to strong workers.
