Extraordinary Images: American Portrait Painting in the 19th Century May 12, 2009

Highlighting the work of Gilbert Stuart, Thomas Sully, Eastman Johnson and Thomas Eakins, this exhibit allows viewers to trace the American evolution of portrait painting from the idealized stylings of those trained in the British tradition to the less formal approach favored at the end of the century.
