This course explores Russian Literature from The Seagull to Dr Zhivago to Requiem for the East. It is impossible to make sense of the modern world without understanding twentieth century Russian literature. The year which begins this period, 1917, has literary, historic and political significance, as the year when the newly established communist regime asserted its authority over literature and culture. The period between 1917 and 2011, between the October Revolution and the era of Perestroika and modern Russia, saw Russian literature develop in many different directions both inside and outside Russia. From Chekhov, Bulgakov and Pasternak through Solzhenitsyn to Brodsky and Makine and the younger writers of today, the objective has been to grasp the essence of the dramatic changes in the world.
