Come 13 – 20 November 2011, Singaporeans will be treated to a little piece of paradise when the World Orchid Conference makes its second debut in Singapore. But locals won’t have to wait until November! Glimpses of the paradise experience are already making its way through Singapore.
T-Shirt Design
The 20th World Orchid Conference (20WOC) will bring a ‘little piece of paradise’ to the bustling city of Singapore come November this year.
NParks together with 9 Fountains is inviting creative individuals to express how they interpret orchids as ‘a little piece of paradise’ and share it with the rest of the world through the 20WOC T-shirt design competition. The online competition was launched on 12 September, and participants can submit their creative entries to www.9fountains.com/20woc anytime between now and 24 October 2011. The competition is open to any individual from any part of the world.
The competition serves as a platform to engage the general public by encouraging contributions on a personal level for a more integrated and community-centric experience. Winners of the competition can win up to SGD$4000 and also get their winning designs produced on t-shirts to be sold at the 20WOC, which is expected to be attended by over 300,000 visitors from around the globe!
There are 2 categories: Editor’s Choice and Viewer’s Choice. Editor’s Choice will see judges selecting the winning design, while Viewer’s Choice will be the most popular design voted by members of the public. The judges for the competition are Derek Chan, Senior Landscape Architect for Gardens by the Bay, and the CEO of 9 Fountains, Mr Andrew Wolf.

Orchid talks for the community
Do Singaporeans know their national flower? Why was the orchid selected to represent Singapore?
To drive home this awareness and interest, NParks is carrying out a series of interesting exhibitions and interactive talks on the wonders of orchids.
The talks will dive into the heritage of orchids both on the international and local scene and give people a rare sneak peak to some very famous orchids in history and presently. Interestingly, they will hear the untold stories and the quirky personalities behind orchids. The exhibitions on the other hand, will serve as an information guide on the history of orchids, orchid conservation and interesting facts on the 20WOC.
Catering to orchid enthusiasts and the lay man, the orchid talks and exhibitions will be an unforgettable experience for everyone.
