Gustave Baumann (1881-1971) built his reputation as a Santa Fe legend around his woodblock prints depicting regional scenes of New Mexico. While best known as a printmaker, Baumann's equally compelling paintings present mystical images of the New Mexico landscape using unusual painting techniques. These woodblock prints developed from opaque watercolor studies that translated the scenes of the region into flattened forms of harmonious hues. Baumann maintained his impeccable level of craftsmanship by personally cutting the blocks (one block for each color), proofing and editing the blocks, and meticulously printing large editions of his images. Children in Santa Fe revered Baumann for his marionette performances. During the Great Depression, he played a leading role promoting and administrating public art programs. This istallation offers a tiny selection of the more than 900 sketches, paintings, prints, marionettes and pieces of furniture in the Museum of Fine Arts collection.
