Menier Gallery is delighted to present the first UK solo show of 2008 Alexandra Reinhardt Award Winner, Jeremy Hutchison.
For the site-specific installation EVERYTHING MUST GO, Hutchison has filled the gallery space with the salvaged remnants of high street shop signs. An overwhelming wreckage of multicoloured words and logos runs up the walls and across the floor: a vision of consumerism’s ruin.
Members of the public are invited to remove pieces of the installation – free of charge.
Smiling ‘shop assistants’ bubble wrap the colourful acrylic shapes for visitors to carry home. In a moment of crisis for the art market, EVERYTHING MUST GO reshuffles the ordinary rules of an art gallery. Notions of value are thrown into question, along with visitors’ relationship to authority, to the gallery space and to each other.
