Everglades Skyway Lecture February 12, 2007

In 1928, the dream of creating a safe passage across the Everglades was realized with the completion of the Tamiami
Trail. However, as that passage was opened, another was closing. Today the existence of Tamiami Trail is strangling
Everglades National Park and Florida Bay from the vital fl ows of water from the north, while the areas to the north
of the Trail are drowning. Kristina Trotta of the Everglades Skyway Coalition will present the visionary solution being
put forward by that Coalition that will restore fl ow to the River of Grass. Ms. Trotta will review the history of
the Tamiami Trail, its impacts on the water fl ows through Shark River Slough, and discuss the Everglades Skyway, an
11 mile elevated roadway that will eliminate the harmful impacts of the Tamiami Trail. This project has been presented
to organizations all across South Florida, and is currently endorsed by over 30 entities, including 5 municipalities
and counties, and it is currently under consideration by Miami-Dade County. Beautiful, simple, poetic and logical: this
