World famous cellist and Cambridge Corn Exchange Artist-in-Residence Julian Lloyd Webber is joined by his wife Jiaxin Cheng to perform Vivaldi’s lyrical and eloquent Concerto for Two Cellos in G Minor. With its lilting rhythms and dusky atmosphere, it’s easy to see why Elgar himself singled out Serenade for Strings as his favourite work. Julian Lloyd Webber concludes the first half of this evening’s concert with a performance of Eric Whitacre's evocative and
pastoral The River Cam. One of the most moving pieces of music written in the twentieth century, Barber’s Adagio for Strings is instantly recognizable as the soundtrack for the Oscar-nominated film Amélie. The evening draws to a close with a spirited performance of Schubert’s fresh, lyrical Symphony
No. 5, anuplifting note on which to end this remarkable concert.
