Ethnic Power in New and Old York: The Irish, the Jews, and the Italians
Successive groups of immigrants and their descendants exercised power in 20th century New York—in politics, finance, unions, and social movements. Join Pete Hamill, former mayor Ed Koch, and Frank Macchiarola in a discussion of how various ethnic groups obtained, held, and divided power and how the shifting dynamics of law, religion, and ethnicity influenced the city’s politics. Moderated by Joshua M. Zeitz, author of White Ethnic New York: Jews, Catholics and the Shaping of Postwar Politics (University of North Carolina Press, 2007). Presented in conjunction with The Jewish Daily Forward: Embracing an Immigrant Community. $
