CLOUD COMPUTING AND THE DIGITAL ECONOMY

Cloud computing has become a popular buzz word in the technology press, but it represents and idea and concept that has been building for over 15 years based on seeds sown 30-40 years before that. Today we can finally see the pieces and parts come together to make cloud computing a reality, and online applications are finally becoming a reality for main stream Australian business. Users are embracing cloud computing at a personal level, and enterprises are now following suit by exploring cost-saving, collaborative, web-based office solutions.

To some extent, the dinosaur days of desktop applications will pass, and the future will largely comprise of hosted applications that will be delivered centrally, and all you need on the desktop is literally a browser and an internet connection to gain access. It is difficult, if not impossible, to predict where cloud computing will take us in 10 years, but there are some clear and obvious implications for us as consumers, our families, for our country, and for our businesses.
