WATER AND CONSERVATION EXPERTS MAUDE BARLOW & WENONAH HAUTER TO ENGAGE IN DISCUSSION ON GLOBAL WATER ISSUES
AT THE CATHEDRAL OF ST. JOHN THE DIVINE
THURSDAY, NOVEMBER 17

From water rights issues and cataclysmic environmental events to the importance of water conservation and water pollution awareness, the global water condition is at the forefront of the environmental dialogue. To reflect on the status of water throughout the globe, water and conservation experts Maude Barlow and Wenonah Hauter will take part in an “Enter the Conversation” discussion on Thursday, November 17th at 7:00 p.m. at the Cathedral of St. John the Divine, located at 1047 Amsterdam Avenue (at 112th Street), Manhattan. The discussion is being hosted in conjunction with the Cathedral’s art exhibition The Value of Water: Sustaining a Green Planet.

Barlow, the National Chairperson of the Council of Canadians, co-founder of the Blue Planet Project, chair of the board of Washington-based Food and Water Watch, and author of international best-seller Blue Covenant: The Global Water Crisis; and Hauter, the Executive Director of Food & Water Watch, will discuss the current complex terrain of issues related to water, including fracking. The Very Reverend Dr. James A. Kowalski, Dean of the Cathedral, will host the discussion.

The discussion is part of the Cathedral’s The Value of Water: Sustaining a Green Planet art exhibition, the largest to ever appear at the Cathedral. The exhibition features the work of over 40 contemporary visual artists, including Jenny Holzer, William Kentridge, Kiki Smith, Bill Viola, Pat Steir, Gregory Amenoff, and others whose work focuses on depicting and reflecting on water. Works from the artists, including paintings, sculptures and multi-media pieces, are currently on display in all areas of the cathedral, from the Great Crossing to the Nave, Chapels, Bays and other intimate areas. The exhibition will be on view until March 25, 2012.

“Enter the Conversation” is part of an ongoing series of programs at the Cathedral of St. John the Divine that encourages individuals to become more involved in their communities and be agents of positive social change.
