Ensemble Parallele presents Philip Glass' Orphee in fully staged chamber opera performances at the Herbst Theatre. Nicole Paiement, Founder and Artistic Director of Ensemble Parallele, will conduct the San Francisco premiere of Glass' opera, based on the surrealist film by Jean Cocteau.

Recently described by the New York Times as one of Glass' "most inspired works," and a "mythic modern opera," this contemporary take on the myth of Orpheus focuses on the power of art, love, and obsession, questioning the difference between life and death, and the real and unreal. Inspired by Cocteau's cinematic techniques, Stage Director Brian Staufenbiel brings the surreal landscape of Orphee from the real world to the circus-like underworld with floating panel projections, transformed mirrors, and stage illusions.

The cast is led by baritone Eugene Brancoveanu as Orphee, soprano Marnie Breckenridge as La Princesse, tenor John Duykers as Heurtebise, and soprano Susannah Biller as Eurydice. Don't miss the spellbinding music and emotionally-charged drama of Philip Glass' Orphee, presented by Ensemble Parallele.
