Energizer® Hurricane Preparedness Expo May 16, 2009

As the 2009 hurricane season approaches, The Shops at Sunset Place, one of South Miami’s leading retail and entertainment destinations, will be hosting the “Energizer® Hurricane Preparedness Expo,” a free-to-the-public event that will inform the general public about hurricane hazards and provide knowledge that can be used to take action before, during and after a storm on Sat., May 16, from noon to 7 p.m.

The Energizer® Hurricane Preparedness Expo will offer something for everyone. Miami-Dade Fire Rescue and Energizer will be there to provide residents with information on how to stay safe and connected during power outages that result from severe weather and hurricanes, including reminding community members to never to use candles when the power goes out. Candles left unattended often lead to accidental home fires.
As part of the Power Through It All™, they will provide demonstrations on how to assemble an emergency power kit to use during power outages, including a flashlight, a battery-operated radio, a battery-operated charger and extra batteries. Three of these power kits will be raffled off throughout the day on Saturday, May 17 to residents. In addition, various companies will showcase and educate families on different products that can be used to facilitate and protect the general public in case of a hurricane. Event attendees will have the opportunity to enjoy safety demonstrations, product displays and more.

The American Red Cross of Greater Miami & The Keys will discuss the importance of preparing for a storm and will showcase some of the key supplies that will be needed before any storm makes landfall. Volunteers will also explain what individuals can expect when checking in to a Red Cross shelter in Miami-Dade County.

Miami Dade County will be providing free informational guides on how to prepare and stay safe during a storm, as well as complimentary weather radios and flashlights to all event attendees.

Radio Caracol will promote ways that the community can stay connected during the storm and will also be providing additional information on staying safe.
