Panel 1: …There is Resistance
This panel will discuss the political, social, and cultural impacts that music of the African Diaspora has had around the world. It will examine the history of the music through its accompaniment with various social movements that inspired social change, specifically looking at how the music has been used as a form of resistance from the Civil Rights Movement to Hip Hop culture. Along with the social impacts, it is important to acknowledge the struggle that the music embodied and the obstacles that it faced in accomplishing its goals. Presenting discourse on the use of music for social change today, this panel will also address music in its relation to the recent political election and the image of Blackness in the United States.
