For Ellen Richman, painting is an intuitive rather than a demonstrative process. She applies paint to her canvases in many thin layers, and her improvisational manner of working with multiple layers results in an organic, rich surface with vibrant color. While creating pieces for this exhibition, Richman focuses on the relationship between negative and positive spaces, tight and open spaces, the interaction of color and light versus dark. Compositions may include repetition, changes or transformations and elements of the unexpected.
