MOUNT JOY TO HOLD ELEVENTH ANNUAL WINTERFEST
The Eleventh Annual Winterfest for the Mount Joy Area Community will be held from 4 to 7 p.m. on Saturday, Dec. 5 on East Main Street from Delta Street to Marietta Avenue.
We are giving back to the community through a very special project this year. A local toy drive, organized by Photography by Barry. Toys and games are needed mostly for children and teens ages 5 through high school age. (We have many donations of toys for infants and pre-schoolers). All unwrapped gifts may be dropped off at Photography by Barry Studio, 59 East Main Street. Winterfest is a great place to bring children. The Little Shoppers store at the Mount Joy Church of God offers gifts that children may purchase, check out the Reindeer Petting area, Obie the Clown, lots of fun games as well as kid favorite foods. Children may also enjoy a free “train ride” this year, from 4:30 until 6:15 pm. It will depart from in front of Sloan’s Pharmacy and return after a short ride around the block.
Also, children, don’t forget the Winterfest Coloring Contest. There are four age categories: 0-3; 4-6; 7-9 and 10-13. You may pick up the contest picture at the Milanof Schock Library in Mount Joy, the Main Street Mount Joy office, the UPS Store and The Fashion Finish. You may also color the picture during Winterfest. A table will be set up at the Children’s Games area. Please drop off your finished picture at Winterfest or at the Main Street Office.
Musical groups will be performing on the main stage, located near Delta Street and the borough office. Musical entertainment groups include some long-time favorites as well as several new groups this year. Featured this year are Mary Mother of the Church Children’s Choir, Donegal Springs Elementary 5th Grade Band, 18 Strings, The Johnny Presto Lounge Act, Sandy Heisey on Keyboard, Donegal High School Rhythm Singers and the DHS Alumni Marching Band. There will be community caroling, accompanied by the Donegal Alumni Band (Glenn Leib, director) and the Bankers Choir from Union National Community Bank led by Leslie Houck. This will begin immediately before the tree lighting. The tree lighting is scheduled for around 7 p.m. at the Rotary Clock on the corner of East Main Street and Marietta Avenue.
You won’t want to miss the arrival of Santa Clause, who will be coming into town via a special carrier—can’t wait to see what it is this year! He and Mrs. Santa are set to arrive around 5 p.m. Children may visit Santa at the Prudential HomeSale Services Real Estate Office on East Main St., until 6:30 p.m. All children receive holiday candy. Photography by Barry will be taking pictures of the children with Santa.
And, the main attractions on Main Street are the more than a dozen area restaurants and food vendors who will be offering food for sale throughout the evening. The vendors are: Jane’s Café, Today’s Pizza, Rotary Club of Mount Joy French Fries, Mick’s All American Pub, Beanie’s, The Tilted Kilt, Simp-lee Seafood, Mount Joy Diner, Gimmie’s Sports Bar, Bube’s Bottling Works, Higher Grounds Café, Mosby’s and The Watering Trough. A sitting area of tables and chairs near the main stage is available for the convenience of those purchasing food. So plan to come out for your evening meal and listen to the sounds of the local entertainers.
Serving as hospitality areas this year are St. Mark’s United Methodist Church, The Church of God, and The First Presbyterian Church. They will be offering areas to come in from the cold and enjoy free hot chocolate and cookies. Restrooms will also be available at these three churches, as well as the borough office. The Church of God will be showing Veggie Tale short movies for the kids in the Main Street Chapel. They will also host a “Build a Truck” event, where you can build a Winross®-style truck for a small fee. This will be held in the Henry Street church lobby.
More than 30 Mount Joy area community groups, civic organizations, churches and businesses will be participating with vendor tables. Check out these organizations who will giving away free items, information about their organization or business, holding fund-raisers, as well as raffles, drawings and give-away’s throughout the evening.
In case of severe weather, please call 653-4227 after 1 pm on Dec. 5 to find out if the event has been cancelled. If at all possible, the tree lighting will take place at 7 pm as scheduled. The ‘rain date’ for the tree lighting only will be Sunday, Dec. 6 at 7 pm. Winterfest is a Main Street Mount Joy event, open to the public free of charge.
