Record Release Show for Electric Junkyard Gamelan’s New Album, Life on Marz! Terry Dame’s Electric Junkyard Gamelan is not your average New York City band. Inspired by Gamelan of Bali, Eastern modal music, funk and hip hop they have fused together a unique rhythmic sound that mixes modern beats with ancient interlocking rhythms using handmade instruments such as the RuBarp, Sitello, Kachapitar and Clayrimba.
Terry creates the instruments mostly from recycled materials such as rubber bands, bed frames, old farm equipment, clay pots, saw blades and truck springs. Each instrument creates a sound that is a fusion of one or more influences ranging from the sitar and classic gamelan gongs to the marimba and a snake charmers reed horn. The resulting sound is refreshingly new yet familiar with strong interlocking rhythms and colorful harmonic washes that blend with funky back beats and driving bass lines.
