October 20, 2011 – Early-music ensemble East of the River will explore the medieval music of the Mediterranean, Balkans and Middle East in its Music at Noon: The Logan Series performance at Penn State Erie, The Behrend College.
The concert begins at noon on Wednesday, Nov. 9, in the McGarvey Commons of the college’s Reed Union Building. Admission is free and open to the public, and free reserved parking will be available in the Reed lot.
East of the River is led by recorder virtuosos Nina Stern and Daphna Mor. For their Music at Noon program, aptly titled “Levantera” after the strong easterly Mediterranean winds of the same name, the duo will be joined by Jesse Kotansky on oud and violin, accordionist Uri Sharlin, and Yo Yo Ma’s Silk Road Ensemble percussionist, Shane Shanahan.
At 11 a.m. on Tuesday, Nov. 8, Stern and Mor will preview portions of their Music at Noon repertoire on WQLN-FM as guests on “Classics with Wally Faas.” The full ensemble also will give two performances for students at Erie’s Diehl School.
Founded at Penn State Behrend by Warren philanthropist and arts advocate Kay Logan, the series’ unique musical outreach has been honored with an Adventurous Programming Award by Chamber Music America and the American Society of Composers, Authors and Publishers. The series receives major support from the Kay Logan Trust and additional funding from the Penn State Behrend Student Activity Fee, Pennsylvania Partners in the Arts and the Erie Arts Endowment of ArtsErie.
