A special EAST MEETS WEST CONCERT, featuring the Tuvan throat singers, Chirgilchin and the folky rootgrass duo, Deadwood Revival, is scheduled on JULY 29. The performance at the Uniterian Universalist Church in Eugene will begin at 7pm.
Atmospheric and mesmeric, ‘throat singing’ is almost too difficult to describe in words. It must be heard to be believed – the music, produced by resonating low sounds in the throat, creates a middle note and a haunting, flute-like harmonic. Chirgilchin is a group of musicians from Tuva, a small Russian province north of Western Mongolia. Singing the ancient folk songs in the Tuvan language, the group also plays instruments hand made by one the peroformers . Two members of the group have won the Grand Prix of International Throat Singing Competition while a third member was named "best instrumentalist" at the International Folk Festival in Tuva.
Opening for Chirgilchin are the 2005 winners of the NW String Summit Band Competition, Deadwood Revival. Their music is described as "roots music with smokin' hooks" with a "warm, tight vocal blend" . The duo, from Washington's Olympic Peninsula perform original and traditional songs with clawhammer banjo and acoustic guitar. American Idol Underground named their tune, Rainy Day Blues, as best folk song last December. Music Connection Magazine said, "this award winning act will put you squarely on theb ack porch of a woodsy cabin. Deadwood Revival recently returned from a California tour which included three shows at the High Sierra Music Festival in Quincy. In October they'll return to California for shows at the Joshua Tree Roots Music Festival.
Advance tickets for the East Meets West Concert are available at Tsunami Books in Eugene for $15, or on the day of the concert, at the door for $16.
