Earth Day Clean-up April 19, 2008

Along with many mammals, birds, reptiles, and invertebrates, an array of amphibian species live in and around Rock Creek, which runs through the National Zoo. If you’ve explored the creek, you may have seen gray tree frogs, bullfrogs, red-backed salamanders, and green frogs. But may have also seen trash and wondered what can be done to make this a healthier home for wildlife.

The Zoo and FONZ invite you to celebrate Year of the Frog and Earth Day at a clean-up of Rock Creek. Help us remove debris from Rock Creek’s banks and keep the surrounding ecosystem healthy.

Registration begins at 8:30 a.m. in the grassy picnic area across from Amazonia. We encourage you to save natural resources and take Metro to the Zoo. If you drive, park in Lot D.

Wear durable shoes (sandals are not recommended) and be prepared for uneven terrain during the clean up. Protect yourself against insects, plants, and the sun with long sleeves and pants. Also, be sure to bring work gloves, sunglasses, and sunscreen. The minimum age is six years old. Participants under the age of 16 must be accompanied by an adult. The clean-up will be held rain or shine.
