Sandwich Me In, a sustainable sandwich-focused restaurant in the Lakeview neighborhood, is excited to host an Earth Day event! For an entire day, Sandwich Me In will be hosting educational discussions with farmers, chefs and green folks, as well as fun activities for kids!
This event is focused on sustainability and educating the community. It is a great opportunity for Chicagoans to snack on delicious food while learning how to reduce their carbon footprint.
Samples, live music and face painting will take place all day. For the complete schedule, see below.
The Schedule:
11:00 a.m. Chef/owner Justin Vrany will teach kids ages 5 and up how to make bread using basic rolling and shaping techniques! Kids can come back in the afternoon to gobble up their own tasty bread. Sign up in restaurant or call 773-348-3037 to register.
12:00 p.m. Jack Sullivan, a 5th grade teacher at Nettelhorst Elementary in Lakeview, planted a garden outside his classroom where students, families and community members are welcome to sit and pick fresh herbs. Jack will be on hand to speak about gardening and lead a workshop with the children as they learn the importance of what the earth offers. Children will plant seeds in a cup to take home.
12:00 p.m. Join Nico Bryant from Brant Family Farms for a free range chickens and eggs conversation and see what chickens look like up close!
12:30 p.m. Ashley Samack, a professional artist, will lead kids ages 4-10 as they paint the seasons on canvas. Everything will be provided and the art will stay up in the restaurant with the names of the kids who participated.
1:00 p.m. Join Greg Gunthorp, a real hands-on farmer, of Gunthorp Farms as he educates guests on sustainable farming and hog raising.
1:30 p.m. Erlene Howard of Collective Resource will be on hand to teach guests about composting in the Chicagoland area and how to set up service to have compost picked up from right from your home.
2:00 p.m. Lee Greene of The Scrumptious Pantry will host a beginners canning demo and provide some delicious Scrumptious Pantry treats!
2:30 p.m. Story time with Christea Parent, a professional reader! Kids can enjoy some snacks and listen to stories while parents enjoy some quiet time!
3:00 p.m. Maria Moran of Green Home Experts will be on hand to discuss how to purchase any green service or product in the Chicagoland area.
3:30 p.m. Ashley Samack, a professional artist, will lead kids ages 4-10 as they paint the seasons on canvas. Everything will be provided and the art will stay up in the restaurant with the names of the kids who participated.
4:00 p.m. Join Eloise Karlatiras of the Green Chicago Restaurant Coalition for an in-depth conversation on who GCRC is and why people should support local sustainable restaurants like Sandwich Me In.
4:30 Story time with Christea Parent, a professional reader! Kids can enjoy some snacks and listen to stories while parents enjoy some quiet time!
5:00 p.m. Local science teacher, Sonja Oliveri of Hawthorne Elementary speaks on ecology in the community.
6:00 p.m. End the night with a bang and listen to a group of musicians play covers and originals!
