Christopher Trapani is the winner of the seventh Wayne Peterson Prize in Music Composition, awarded by Earplay and San Francisco State University's College of Creative Arts. The award, for Trapani's "Sunflower Suite," includes a cash prize of $3,500 and a public performance by Earplay during the 2005-2006 season.

Created by the university in 1998 to honor Peterson, a Pulitzer Prize winner in music and a professor of music at the school for more than three decades, the Peterson Prize specifically honors a composer younger than 40.

Trapani, 25, is a native of New Orleans who holds a bachelor's degree from Harvard, where he studied composition with Bernard Rands and poetry with Helen Vendler. He received a master's of music degree at the Royal College of Music in London, which preceded a two-year residency at the Cité Internationale des Arts in Paris, where he continues to study composition with Philippe Leroux.

"Sunflower Suite" will be performed by Earplay on March 13 at Herbst Theatre.
