Local purchase-related search: that is what directories are largely about. However, we are concerned with more than just information on merchants and products; we need to look at other ways of searching, other services to the audience and advertisers. Newspapers, trade magazines, classified free sheets, city guides, vertical portals and, of course, search engines: in many of these adjacent markets, elements of the directory business are to be found. Conversely, many ideas and projects in the directory industry have elements of these businesses too: in print and online, in classified directories and in business directories.

In this conference, we shall be looking over the fence, first to see what the adjacent markets are doing and to examine how developments there may impact on our industry; but also to look at alternative business models, alternative sales channels, distribution on mobile platforms and integration of web search functionalities. Wherever there are good ideas to open up markets, fences should not be insurmountable.

In order to keep focus, one has to look further than one's own backyard. What happens in other markets may very well help us to pursue growth in directories and beyond.
