YOO-HOO, MRS. GOLDBERG
IS HAVING A PARTY!
Tuesday, September 14, 8:00 pm
Film, discussion and party
You are invited to celebrate the DVD release of the humorous and captivating film that Variety named one of the top 10 grossing documentaries of 2009. Join director Aviva Kempner (Peabody Award, The Life and Times of Hank Greenberg, and WJFF co-founder) and Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg, who appears in the film, for a talk about the making of Yoo-Hoo, Mrs. Goldberg and to view some of the bonus feature material on the new 2-disc special edition DVD. The new DVD includes over two hours of material not in the film--from a surprising 1954 episode featuring Mrs. Goldberg in bed with her husband Jake (a rare site in early television!) to early career appearances by Anne Bancroft and Steve McQueen plus additional interviews with Justice Ginsburg, actor Ed Asner, producers Norman Lear (All in the Family) and Gary David Goldberg (Family Ties), and NPR correspondent Susan Stamberg.
The eye-opening documentary traces Gertrude Berg’s rise to stardom from her childhood in New York to her early radio days to her enormously influential weekly television program, "The Goldbergs" (1949-56), America's first successful sitcom which Berg wrote, starred in and produced. A television pioneer and entertainment genius, Berg was presented the first Best Actress Emmy® in history.
A party follows the film program. The DVD, Molly aprons, mittens and cookbooks will be for sale to benefit the Washington Jewish Film Festival.
Co-sponsored by the University of Michigan.
