DUSK DANCES BRINGS THE MAGIC BACK TO MALVERN
Four nights of dance and music presented at dusk
Neilson Park, July 20-23, 2011
Dusk Dances, one of Toronto’s most vibrant and popular cultural events, returns this July for 4 nights of exciting dance performances at Neilson Park in the Scarborough-Malvern community.
With musical performances by Keith Pascall and Musicians, and hosted by Shannon T. Boodram, the Dusk Dances program features four innovative dance pieces:
• First Nation’s dancer and choreographer Santee Smith’s Kaha:wi – a piece celebrating the feminine spirit and Iroquoian traditions.
• Jenn Goodwin’s Stink – an exhilarating and acrobatic work featuring dancers suspended from the branches of trees.
• Tamla Matthews’ Haat Melawo - let's join hands – a new work for a group of young dancers from the community that fuses African and Indian movements to explore cultural diversity.
• Local dance crew Raw Energy – a group of dedicated and talented young dancers will premiere a new work showcasing their energetic, urban style.
Dusk Dances is an outdoor dance festival that brings an array of high quality contemporary and traditional dance to public parks. As dusk descends, a theatrical host ushers the audience - which invariably includes children, dog walkers and local residents - to five eclectic dance pieces that unfold in different areas of the park. Audiences are invited on a pay-what-you-can basis to an innovative site-specific festival, which is not only an artistic event, but a social and cultural one as well.
