Edward Kennedy “Duke” Ellington was a beloved dance-band leader, a jazz icon, and a Pulitzer Prize– winning composer. Whether on stage at the Cotton Club or Carnegie Hall, in Hollywood films or vaudeville theaters, or at music festivals around the world, his message was always the same: “I Love You Madly.” And his music made us love him back: “Mood Indigo,” “Sophisticated Lady,” “In a Sentimental Mood,” “Caravan,” and “Do Nothing till You Hear from Me” are just a handful of Ellington songs that will forever be remembered as an essential part of America’s golden age.
