This informal talk will focus on building relational skills and resilience in at-risk children through art-making. In one program, urban girls make communal art pieces out of clay, sheets and paint, learning about cooperation and connection. In another, Drums and Poems, children build poems as a group based on rhythms they bang out on found objects. This programs brings the neuropsychological research on rhythm as a calming factor together with the fun of playing with words: children learn relationship-building and literacy at the same time.
