Benefit for: Color Without Borders
What is Color Without Borders: A nonprofit organization devoted to designing an alternative way of learning for afrocolombian communities by exploring their African roots through the arts and history.
Who we are: A multidisciplinary group specializing in the African Diaspora and who are concerned with afrocolombian communities at risk. This project was founded and is directed by Yhara P. Zelinka with the support of Dr. Evelyn Newman-Phillips, and Martin Kwaku Obeng.
Who will benefit: The general public and afrocolombian communities. The first two projects are a group of children and young adults led by Daisy Córdoba Berrío, from the Pacific coast, has been displaced by violence and internal conflict; this community is located in El Oasis neighborhood nearby Bogota, Colombia. A second group of children in Palenque de San Basilio, nearby Cartagena, who are currently working under the guidance of Tomas Teherán Salgado.
When: This is an ongoing project started in 2009.
Where: The organization is settled in Connecticut but the projects are based in Colombia, South America.
Mission: To safeguard and promote the afrocolombian’s cultural heritage among previously identified groups of children at risk from the Pacific and the Caribbean Colombian coasts through cultural and educational programs, creating a connection with their African legacy.
Vision: To make a positive change in the life of afrocolombian people and communities at risk, opening new paths trough cultural and educational activities for a better future.
