Dreams of Speaking marks the first full evening of choreography by Heidi Schweiker, featuring music by Daniel Berkman. The program includes the premiere of title piece, "Dreams of Speaking" a quartet set to new music by Daniel Berkman, plus revivals of works chosen to build the context of Schweiker's choreographic presence as it has developed for more than a decade in the Bay Area. These include the solo "Come Rain" (2005), "Sandbox Shuffle" (2008), and "Shadow Box"(2002), a collaboration with fellow MJDC dancer Melanie Elms.
Best known as a performer with Margaret Jenkins Dance Company and previously with Janice Garrett & Dancers, Heidi Schweiker steps forward as a dancemaker in her own right, fusing her trademark "luscious dancing" (Dance Magazine) and "unfailing clarity of shape" (rachelhoward.com) with a long-cultivated and personal choreographic sensibility.
Schweiker's style is marked by conversational and responsive relationship between dancers onstage, as well as by vibrant movement crafted with equal fascination for what unfolds organically and for formal construction. Seeking to give shape in the here and now to what's universal and timeless, she offers movement phrases like labyrinths, drawing an audience into unexpected moments of vulnerability and discovery, and trusting that the micro-narratives of human experience shown onstage are flexible metaphors for what the mind needs to process of the larger world.
